Will is about to turn six, which has me all weepy and nostalgic. I started looking back at old pictures and parties, and I decided to share some highlights with you!
When our William-boy turned one, I had this idea for the best first birthday party ever. Well, at least for a family like ours. #TheNerdsbornes
His birthday is at the end of the summer, but I started preparations for his EPIC party in the spring. This makes me sound super intense and crazy prepared, but let me explain before you jump to conclusions.
The theme for the best first birthday party you have EVER HEARD OF was (drum roll, please)
“Williams Throughout History.”
I know. Mind blown.
The first thing I did was make an exhaustive list of AWESOME Williams. From historical figures (William the Conqueror, William Shakespeare, William McKinley, etc.) to modern celebrities & politicians (Will Smith, Billy Joel, Bill Clinton, and so on).
After making my list, I began scouring the internet for pictures of the various Williams to print out for the party, but then I took it one step further. I upped my Google game and started collecting mailing addresses for all the living Williams on my list. Sites like FanMail.Biz are great resources, especially since they focus on mailing addresses for autograph requests.
I drafted a letter “from Baby William” requesting an autograph as a present for his first birthday and included a photo of our precious boy. I mean, who wouldn’t send their autograph to an adorable baby destined to grow up into another super rad William?
Honestly, I had zero expectations and thought the worst that could happen would be that Bill Nye and Billy Idol think there is some weird mom in California throwing a bizarro, history-themed birthday party for her infant.
Whatever, dudes! You are both in your SIXTIES, and one of you wears a bow tie (I’m lookin’ at you NYE) and the other still bleaches and spikes his hair. WHO ARE YOU CALLING WEIRD?!
Here’s where things took a turn for the awesome. From May to July, autographed photos trickled into our mailbox. We ended up with pictures from Bill Gates, Bill Cosby, Bill Clinton, Billy Crystal, Billy Joel, AND PRINCE WILLIAM. (I was really pulling for Will Ferrell and Will Arnett, but no dice.)
Okay, so Prince William didn’t actually send us an official signed photo, but the letter we got was AMAZING. It read:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Osborne,The Duke of Cambridge has asked me to thank you for your letter of 26th April requesting a signed photograph for your son, William. It was kind of you to write to His Royal Highness, but I regret that it is not possible to comply with your request. As I am sure you will appreciate, The Duke of Cambridge receives a great number of similar requests for signed photographs and I am afraid they all receive the same response. I have however enclosed an unsigned photograph that I do hope William will like.I am sorry to send you such a disappointing reply. Nevertheless, His Royal Highness has asked me to pass on his best wishes and his hopes that William’s first birthday is a very special day with family and friends.Yours Sincerely,Mrs. Claudia Holloway
The day of the party, I had pictures printed off of about 40 of our favorite Williams, Bills, Billys, & Wills, and I strung them up over the buffet.
We served William themed foods, as well. “Billy Graham” Crackers with different toppings. William Shake-spears (fruit skewers). Jello Pudding Cups in honor of Bill Cosby. Buffalo Bill Cody Trail Mix. And a bucket of beer, also known as… William BREW-ster (Fun Fact: My in-laws are actually descendants of William Brewster who was on the actual Mayflower). I also made a William Themed playlist of songs by artists named William: Billy Joel, Billie Holiday, Will Smith, Bill Haley and the Comets, Bill Withers, and Billy Idol.
